Rapid GDP growth and industrialisation define the world’s emerging markets. These markets are led in terms of size by China and India. Adecco Institute undertakes research in these markets with partners such as China’s Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, India’s Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Warwick University.
As India and China open up, unemployment, employability, labour law and educational attainment are fuelling structural change in these countries’ labour markets. The research focus of the Institute here includes labour laws and transition of the young from school into the workplace.
China
Our report on China analyses the impact of this country’s labour market reforms on the workforce and on foreign and Chinese business. The growing shortage of skilled workers – leading to severe recruitment and retention problems – is one of the most pressing issues, and certainly is at the very top of foreign and local business concerns.

India
The Adecco Institute and Tata Institute of Social Sciences Labour Market Research Initiative (ATLMRI) will soon publish their report assessing labour market pressures and developments as the Indian economy transforms and opens up. The growth of unemployment, widening in equality and skills mismatches, especially in the emerging sectors of the economy, are just some of the issues being assessed. The ATLMRI draws upon primary and secondary research across industry sectors, genders and regions.
